Today the weather has improved, the sun is out and the wind, although still 20 knots or so is now dead astern. We passed San Francisco this morning, to far out to see anything.
The ride is very smooth now, whereas the first night out rounding Cape Flattery was lumpy and since my cabin is right in the bow, I felt the ship lift up an slam down with a thump quite a few times.

Saw a whale blow in the distance today, and several other ships, all freighters. We dock in Long Beach tomorrow morning by the Queen Mary and have a day in Port.

Although my Mother and Aunt Mary are on board, I don’t see that much of them. We plan to meet for dinner tonight.

The exciting bits start in about a week when we get to Nuku Hiva. Right now I’m spending most of the time in my cabin writing software. I do take frequent breaks for a circuit round the deck and a snack.

  • oregon coastal waves

Day 2 of my trip to Australia on MV Amsterdam   It is now 11:30 AM and we are off the Oregon Coast south of the Columbia River. Weather grey and drizzling, wind 25 knots from the SW.

Looking forward to arriving in  LA on  Wednesday at 7 AM. Next stop after that Nuku Hiva land of Melville’s Typee!

I have tried my Spot messenger twice, it doesn’t seem to work out here. I have done a few circuits of the ship for exercise, and climb up and down the stairs rather than use the elevator.

I guess the weather will improve as we near LA.

  • five from Table 29

The planning has been going on for months, and now the day has arrived, and five of the Table 29 gang are leaving for their South Pacific cruise.   Tom came from Vancouver Island, and Phil came from Vermont.  David and Hazel are from Edmonton.  The problem is logistics.  How do you fit all these people and their luggage into one vehicle?

David and Hazel  proceeded directly to the cruise terminal.  The fives in the photo are going on a limo.  Dan Iorga, owner/operator of Stars Choice Limousine is my a business colleague, and he personally came and picked the gang of five in this elegant limousine for “an unforgetable ride, in luxury and style” .   The ship leaves at 5 pm, and the limo arrives at 1:30 pm.
