If you want updated news, The Maui News has a daily report on the race.
In 2008, Turicum was the first boat in its class to finish and the class champion in corrected time. This year, it is in Division II, the fastest in its division with PHRF rating of 89.
Here’s a quick lesson on Making Sense of PHRF rating:
1. Take the difference in rating
2. Multiply by the number of miles in the race
3. Gives you the number of seconds required to be ahead. For example:
Terremoto PHRF rating of 4
Delicate Balance PHRF rating of 6868 – 4 = 64
64 x 2308 = 147,712 seconds
147,712 seconds divided by 3600 seconds (1 hour = 3600 seconds)
gives you 41 hours
almost two daysDelicate Balance can finish up to 41 hours behind Terremoto and beat them technically.
You can follow Turicum’s blog, you can appreciate their comments like:
After a great evening of 20 knot winds and beam reaching at our polar speeds, we were once again stalled in light airs and big sloppy rollers for ten hours. For your amusement, you can track directly Terremoto on their spot messenger as well as Delicate Balance.

For those watching the Vic Maui Race, The Maui News has a daily condensed news report on the whereabouts of the boats, and some commentaries.
Tracking the boats through the Vic-Maui website is not easy at the moment, because the boats are on top of one another, and it is time consuming to decipher the details.
Although friends and relatives find that it is enough that their loved ones are safe in their journeys, winning is always a bonus.
Terremoto is leading the race as expected. A Riptide 35, it is a custom racer designed by Paul Bieker. These babies are conceived for the purpose of winning races, and there are only two of its kind built. Both of these Riptide 35 raced in the Pacific Cup 1998 race and placed 1st and 2nd in the race.
Part of the fun in following the race is understanding the significance and history of these boats. Terremoto has a glorious past and a glamourous husband and wife team with a crew of two strong young men.
See PHRF rating of the racers.

A woman’s touch makes all the difference in the interior of this mighty little boat Terremoto. Everything has a home and is there ready when needed.

Host Gary and Joanne Salmon – gracious owners of the motor yacht Touche provided their yacht as spectator boat for the friends and family of Delicate Balance – where they can view the start of the race in warmth and comfort. Gary made several turns so that we can have a close look at Delicate Balance and take photos.
