Idiot’s Guide to Tracking the Vic Maui Race
2 Comments
If you want updated news, The Maui News has a daily report on the race.
In 2008, Turicum was the first boat in its class to finish and the class champion in corrected time. This year, it is in Division II, the fastest in its division with PHRF rating of 89.
Here’s a quick lesson on Making Sense of PHRF rating:
1. Take the difference in rating
2. Multiply by the number of miles in the race
3. Gives you the number of seconds required to be ahead. For example:
Terremoto PHRF rating of 4
Delicate Balance PHRF rating of 6868 – 4 = 64
64 x 2308 = 147,712 seconds
147,712 seconds divided by 3600 seconds (1 hour = 3600 seconds)
gives you 41 hours
almost two daysDelicate Balance can finish up to 41 hours behind Terremoto and beat them technically.
You can follow Turicum’s blog, you can appreciate their comments like:
After a great evening of 20 knot winds and beam reaching at our polar speeds, we were once again stalled in light airs and big sloppy rollers for ten hours. For your amusement, you can track directly Terremoto on their spot messenger as well as Delicate Balance.
Three possible routes for the Vic Maui 2010 race depending on wind changes.

Delicate Balance is like “Grumpy Old Men” with their “Bucket List” on a “Mission Impossible”. But I admire the spirit of adventure. It is never too late. It is the journey that counts.
It would be hard to beat the serious and experienced racers like Terremoto, Turicum, Starlight Express and Red Sheila.
They have done it before and they will be learning from their mistakes.
So, if Delicate Balance can complete the race, that would be quite an achievement. -

Turicum also has mature people in their team. The Vic-Maui Race is an expensive venture, and most young people do not have the luxury of time or money.
